autumns symphonies – a pas de deux of ancient lovers (movement iv)

Parole de Les Coeurs Tendres:

A  Pas de Deux of Ancient Lovers

(to my Muse of muses and our shadows)

iv

“O my Nightingale

We are the clefts in the Sinai rocks

We are the Secret Staircases

Why do you deprive us of your countenance/?”

-Canticles 2.14 (transliteration by Broeder Emmanuel)

pasdedeux7

there are only but two with greater hart

Y en a qui ont le cœur si large

these are those who enter without knocking

Qu’on y entre sans frapper

there are only but two with greater hart

Y en a qui ont le cœur si large

whose moiety all others see less than half

Qu’on en voit que la moitié

there are many who are so frail of harts

Y en a qui ont le cœur si frêle

those hands whose fingers are slow not nimble

Qu’on le briserait du doigt

there are many who are so frail of harts

Y en qui ont le cœur trop frêle

to live like you and me would crush their souls

Pour vivre comme toi et moi

those many have eyes cloudy with flowers

Z’ont pleins de fleurs dans les yeux

these eyes are full of stormy clouds of fear

Les yeux à fleur de peur

fear they are lacking the hours to find

De peur de manquer l’heure

that all paths find old endings in paris

Qui conduit à Paris

there are only but two with harts so tender

Y en a qui ont le cœur si tender

these are those who walk with their breasts exposed
